If you’re craving sea air, independent shopping and plenty of traditional seaside charm this May Bank Holiday, look no further than Herne Bay.

Nestled on the north coast of Kent, Herne Bay has all the makings of a perfect bank holiday day trip, or leisurely weekend break. With its blend of coastal walks, local cafes and town centre full of independents, Herne Bay offers the ideal destination for the entire family. Here’s a few ideas to make the most of your visit.

Start your day with a Promenade Stroll

There’s something so special about Herne Bay in the morning sunshine, before the crowds arrive and the sea sparkles, with the view of Reculver Towers in the distance.

Begin your visit with a wander along the promenade, taking in Herne Bay Pier, dotted with lovely eateries, the Pier Village, the Helter Skelter and so much more.

This weekend Herne Bay Pier have some special events and namely on Monday 5th May to celebrate VE Day 80th Anniversary celebration, with cream tea experiences, live music and much more.

Head to their website to find out more

Grab a coffee from one of our fabulous coffee shops from the Hungry Plum or Garage Coffee

both a stone’s throw from the promenade, or one of the many independent cafes close by(check out our Instagram page for inspiration) and then enjoy the view from the promenade or beautiful Waltrop Gardens adjacent to the sea. It really is the perfect way to ease into the weekend.

Shop Local in the Heart of the Town

Herne Bay’s town centre is just a short stroll from the sea, and it is packed with independent shops, restaurants and cafes that give the Bay its unique character. Explore Mortimer Street, William Street and the High Street for a mix of vintage finds, handmade gifts, local art and coastal-inspired homeware.

Whether you’re browsing an independent bookshop, antique shop, picking up a new piece of handmade pottery or sampling local produce, there’s something so personal about shopping in Herne Bay.

Lunch with a view or a Local Twist

When lunchtime calls, Herne Bay delivers. If you’re after fresh, flavoursome food then visit one of the many restaurants from street food to authentic Italian or fish and chips. If you would prefer to eat and savour the sea view then ahead along the promenade.

There’s nothing quite like taking a moment to cherish the long weekend by the sea.

Culture and Coastal Adventures

Walk off your lunch with a visit to the Seaside Museum Herne Bay, where you’ll discover everything from fossils to the story of the town’s Victorian heyday and also their latest popular exhibition celebrating 200 years of Kent’s railway history and development – Herne Bay & Kent Coast – Railway 200.

For a longer wander follow the coast to the beautiful Reculver Towers.

The walk takes you along the sea with wide, open views. Be sure to bring your walking shoes and your camera!

Sweet Treats and a Sunset to Remember

In our opinion, no trip to Herne Bay is complete without something sweet. Pop along to one of our fabulous cafes for homemade cakes, an afternoon tea, or visit one of our ice cream parlours including Ice Cream Sundae, Scoops Herne Bay and Makcari’s.

Sunsets over Herne Bay are breathtaking, and with the pier silhouetted against the red glowing sky, it is the kind of view that makes you stay for longer.
