Weird & Wonderful Ways to Save the Planet!

11th July 2026

Get inspired by nature and design your own planet-saving invention!

Join Madeleine to discover the strange and ingenious ways plants and animals have come up with to tackle different problems, and some of their ideas we've used too! After exploring the Franciscan Gardens to take a closer look at what's around, you'll use what you've found to create your very own nature-based machine to solve an environmental issue! Recommended age 4+ Tickets for this event also include entry to the Franciscan Gardens.

Participants are welcome to bring a picnic blanket and refreshments. Please note that the nearest public toilets are across the road in The Beaney. Tickets for this event are charged at £5 per child (or £18 to include a copy of the book which you can get signed by the author afterwards) and on a pay-as-you-feel basis for adults, but please note that each person attending will need a ticket. All money from ticket sales supports the running, continuation and expansion of Canterbury Children's Literature Festival and our year-round outreach work within the local community.

About the Author: I'm curious about the world around me. As well as science, I enjoy digging into philosophy, sociology, art and literature. I'm passionate about the climate crisis, and am trying (not always successfully) to reduce my own environmental impact. It's why you might hear me talk about attempting to give up flying, failed veganism (why is cheese so delicious?), four day working weeks, expanding wild areas in the UK, and social justice. I have two cats, who are excellent and ridiculous. I expect I'll write about them someday.
