Dr Iain Goodall runs the Stour Monitoring Program (StoMP) and is a Senior Scientific Officer at the University of Greenwich. He has worked on Air and Water Quality Monitoring for over two decades, developing methods to monitor different types of pollutants.
The River Stour is under pressure from elevated nutrient concentrations, pharmaceutical drugs, agricultural chemicals, ‘Forever Chemicals’, metals and microplastics. These pollutants threaten sensitive ecosystems, making sustained monitoring essential, particularly as development within the catchment continues.
The Stour Monitoring Programme (StoMP) began during the COVID-19 pandemic through his involvement in local volunteering in Canterbury. Observing pollution impacts first-hand led him to start analysing water samples in 2022, initially focusing on pharmaceuticals before expanding to other pollutants. The project has since grown into a collaborative programme involving university colleagues, environmental organisations and Citizen Scientists.
Iain’s talk will look at what the programme has revealed so far, how it can be continued, and how local people can contribute to it.
The talk will take place in Cornwallis East Seminar Room 1 on the University of Kent campus. It is open to all and no booking is needed.
