Folklore expert James Frost reveals the origins and history of some of the stranger Kentish Christmas traditions and customs.
The talk will explore the interaction between three midwinter folk customs: Christmas Mumming plays, Wassailing (which may have originated in Kent) and Hoodening, with its enigmatic Hooden Horse, and which was performed by teams of farm workers in East Kent.
James will be joined by the Hooden Horses, making a rare special appearance. The talk will be followed by mulled wine (a non-alcoholic alternative will be available) and mince pies.
