Michi Masumi and Ju Li take different approaches to a shared interest; not just prompting AI but exploring how they can leverage it to enhance their own unique creativity. Both have developed tools and a methodology for using Artificial Intelligence as a (contested) collaborator. They challenge perceptions around AI’s role in the relationship between artistic creation and tradition (Ju Li) and artistic creation, counter-narratives and GenAI as an assistance tool (Masumi). Masumi seeks to open dialogue around representation, power, and authorship, offering a model for how creative technologies might be reshaped when marginalised voices remain central to the process. Ju Li has created a system, Torchand, that is both a tool (on display in the gallery) and a methodology, tailored to the specific characteristics of his work and creative habits. The exhibition asks whether AI is a tool to be used to travel in new directions, a liberating force for creativity and transformation, or a risk to originality, integrity and an artist’s unique ideas and delivery.
