A Bat Walk: Westgate Gardens

22nd September 2026
The Stour Valley Riverfest 2026

Join us for a nocturnal walk along the river as it flows though Westgate Gardens.

Date: Tuesday 22nd September.
Time: meet at 18.50 for walk from 19.00–20.30.
Location: meet in Toddlers Cove car park (CT2 8BG)

Join us for a nocturnal walk along the river as it flows though Westgate Gardens. We will look for bats foraging for insects in the gardens and over the river, using bat detectors to listen for their ultrasonic calls. Find out more about their fascinating lifestyle, and the insects on which they feed, and enjoy discovering the wildlife that emerges at night. Insect activity is very weather dependent so there are no guarantees, but we hope to find at least two species of pipistrelle, as well as Daubenton’s bats, flying low over the water.

Participant Requirements List
• Wear sufficiently warm clothes for after dusk
• Suitable flat-soled footwear for walking (flip-flops not recommended)
• Bring a torch for safety, though we will use them as little as possible
• You are advised to bring insect repellent
• No unaccompanied children under the age of 16
• No dogs please
• Not well-suited for wheelchair users
Numbers are limited to 20. Please book by email (dickvanewright@gmail.com) with subject heading BATSFOWP, with name(s) and stating number of places requested.

Please check Canterbury City Council social media for updates.
