About Whitstable Community Museum & Gallery
Whitstable may have started as a small village beside the Thames Estuary, but this location generated a fascinating history. Fishing is still important and we have a preserved whelk boat on show. Helmet diving was developed here and included blowing up the Russian Navy in the Crimean war. Regular sea trade included London, the Mediterranean, Australia and importing coal from Northumbria. The first steam locomotive hauled passenger railway ran between Whitstable and Canterbury from May 1830. Stephenson's locomotive Invicta on display. Games and hands-on activities make Whitstable Museum an excellent experience for families. Open all year Thursday to Saturday and sometimes more!
