Gareth Balch and Jeff Alexander play some of the most beautiful and rarely heard music for two lutes
Gareth Balch and Jeff Alexander play some of the most beautiful and rarely heard music for two lutes.
Composers such as Robert Johnson and John Dowland explored the full possibilities of 'orchestrating' music for two lutes; the effect is a journey through counterpoint and exhilarating music designed to be heard in an intimate setting. The acoustic of St Gregory’s Centre for Music lends itself perfectly to this stunning repertoire. Jeff and Gareth perform widely in Kent, the South East and across the UK.
They have performed in the Canterbury Festival and Canterbury Medieval Pageant and recorded film and music in St Martin’s Church. Gareth combines playing with PhD research into early Spanish music at Royal Holloway, University of London, and performance practice on the vihuela.
He has a Master of Music degree with distinction from Canterbury Christ Church University. Jeff has been Professor of Guitar at Canterbury Christ Church for over 40 years, and performs a wide range of music, including with his group Open Water, recently featured in this year’s Canterbury Festival.
