Disabled Go
DisabledGo is a website aimed at empowering disabled people and their families across the UK. It is a national accessibility initiative responding to the frustrations experienced by millions of disabled people when trying to engage with their community. DisabledGo provides information to UK towns, cities and areas via its award winning website www.DisabledGo.com.
Established in 2000 by its now Chief Executive, Dr. Gregory Burke the aims and goals of the organisation have their roots in Gregory's personal experiences as a disabled person.
DisabledGo and Canterbury City Council have worked with hundreds of shops, pubs, restaurants, cinemas and other public venues, so that DisabledGo-Canterbury can provide access details for these goods and service providers. This information can make a huge difference for people with hearing, vision or mobility related access concerns. The guide may also be useful for older people and those with pushchairs.
DisabledGo-Canterbury provides disabled access information to venues and services within the district to enable disabled people to judge which of these meets their needs. By doing so, it empowers disabled people to engage with their society, enjoy it, contribute to it and find employment within it.
The guide to the Canterbury district covers over 1000 goods and service providers and was launched after an extensive and unprecedented research exercise in 2006. Every venue included in DisabledGo-Canterbury was visited in person by a trained surveyor who carried out a detailed survey of the access available.
By logging on to www.DisabledGo.com people can check, for example, whether a pub is accessible to a wheelchair user, whether a cinema can offer a hearing loop, whether a hotel offers adapted rooms, and whether a restaurant offers menus in large print or Braille.
