Herne and West Blean Wood Walk at The Blean Ancient WoodlandsThis walk starts and finishes at Herne Common and goes through woodland and countryside with views across the Swale estuary. It is a 5.5km walk and should take 1.5 to 2 hours. The Starting Point is Anemone Way, off the Canterbury to Herne Bay Road (the A291) at the Old Herne Hospital site, almost opposite the 'First and Last' public house.
You can access the starting point of the walk by bus - travel on the Stagecoach bus no. 4, 4A, 4B, 6, 6A or 6B and alight at the 'First and Last' public house, on the A291 (Herne Bay Road) at Herne. For information please call 0870 608 2608. Or you can go by car - take the A291 between Herne Bay & Sturry, north of Canterbury.
There are many points of interest along the way including panoramic views over Knockhimdown Hill and the escarpment, that was Stubbs Wood, to Sheppey and Essex beyond.
For more details please visit www.theblean.co.uk where regular updates are posted or visit the Canterbury, Herne Bay or Whitstable Information Centres for a leaflet format of the Circular Walk.
The Blean is on heavy clay so can get very wet and muddy - boots are therefore recommended. While you are on your walk please respect the countryside by:
- Leaving gates as you find them.
- Taking your litter home.
- Keep dogs under close control and on a lead when in nature reserves and fields with animals.
