Barnsole Vineyard, grapes  Barnsole Vineyard, grapes

Visitors are most welcome to this family run vineyard, which currently extends over an area of 3 acres (1.2 hectares), a size that still allows close attention to detail so as to produce high quality grapes. The vineyard was planted in the spring of 1993 after some 16 years of research and experimentation as to which grape varieties and growing system would best suit this area. We produce up to 15,000 bottles per year.

A modern approach is employed. The vines are grown to generate a large uncongested leaf area so as to capture as much sunlight as practicable, whilst the grapes are positioned for maximium protection. We make and bottle our own wine, taking great care to preserve the delicate freshness of the fruit. Use of stainless steel tanks, cool processing and fermentation and protection from air are all important in achieving the best results with white wines. We also make red wine from early ripening grape varieties.

For the last 15 years we have been able to achieve 'Quality Wine' status for our wines. This is awarded by the Food Standards Agency and gives us comparable quality standard to other European producers. These include the 'Appellation Controlée' scheme in France and Qualitätswein' scheme in Germany. Wines are analysed to ensure that they comply with EU Qualiy Wine Specifications, tasted by an expert panel and the wine making process is checked by our regional Inspector. Wines that pass are labelled 'English Quality Wine'. In addition our wines have won bronze and silver medals in regional and national competitions.

Free mini-tours, lasting about 20 minutes, are available. Visitors may see how our vines are grown and wine produced. This is followed by a free tasting and our wines are available for direct sale. We also offer guided group tours for up to 40 visitors by prior arrangement, for which we make a small charge.
