The Herne Bay Art Trail

herne bay art trail map

Herne Bay has historical associations with prominent artists such as: Dante Gabriel Rosetti, who stayed in Herne Bay some weeks convalescing in 1877 with Sister Christina Rosetti; and Marcel Duchamp who visited Herne Bay in 1913 and provided the inspiration for the centenary Duchamp Festival. Herne Bay Arts Group was formed in 1957, and its first president was famous English artist Augustus John. CT6 Contemporary arts group followed in 2001.

The introduction of public art which heralded the emergence of Herne Bay as an aspiring cultural centre for the arts began as part of the pedestrianisation scheme in the early nineties. Not all of this has survived in its original form: the dancing couple by Rachel Flandrak and the Heron can still be seen, but the Bronze Diver outside the swimming pool has gone.

The past twenty-five years have seen the visual arts flourish in Herne Bay with increasing numbers of established artists choosing to live and work in the town, and developing opportunities for the community to engage in arts activities and appreciation of the visual arts, which is evident from the Arts trail.

We hope you will enjoy it!
