For Walkers and Nature Lovers - Herne Bay

With seven miles of open and accessible coastline, there is no shortage of places for walkers and nature lovers to discover. There are many places to explore in Herne Bay itself or, if you feel like adventuring further afield, you can walk or cycle to Whitstable or, in the other direction, to Reculver and Minnis Bay.

The Herne Bay Cultural Trail provides an opportunity to find the historical and general places of interest in the town. Points of interest include the statue of Sir Barnes Neville Wallis, designer of the bouncing bomb, and a large mural depicting famous people who have lived or been associated with the town.

The Reculver to Herne Bay walk is an opportunity to enjoy the sights and sounds to be experienced along one of the most rapidly changing stretches of the Kent coastline. Start at the historic St Mary's Church and head through Reculver Country Park along the famous Saxon Shore Way and back alongside the strand. Thousands of migrating birds can be seen here in winter and sand martin nest in the cliffs in summer. An interpretation centre in the country park outlines the geological and archaeological history of this interesting area. It also highlights the wildlife to be seen on the marshes and rare cliff top wildflower meadows throughout the year.
