Walking and Cycling in the Canterbury district

There are numerous walks around the Canterbury area taking you through beautiful countryside and coastlines and you can also follow part of the route of the Canterbury Pilgrims. There are accessible walks for wheelchairs and pushchairs, long or short, flat or hilly and suitable for all levels of fitness. For more walking routes around the district take a look at the Active Canterbury website.

North of the city is the award winning Crab and Winkle Way. This mostly traffic free, seven mile cycling and walking route is based on an old railway line running between Canterbury and Whitstable. It's safe for children and provides a perfect place to picnic along the way in the heart of one of England's oldest forests.

On the eastern side of Herne Bay, you will discover Reculver Towers, the site of a Roman Fort built to guard the Wantsum Channel that once divided Thanet from the rest of Kent. The contrast of the nearby rugged countryside and open seascape makes for a bracing walk along the sea defence wall that's certain to blow the cobwebs away.

Bring your bike or hire one and explore our beautiful district. Enjoy the breathtaking views and feel the wind in your hair as you travel around the eco friendly way. Stop for lunch in a country pub; you've earnt it! For more cycle routes around the district take a look at the Active Canterbury website.
