Oyster Bay Trail Cycle Route

Start point postcodes: Swalecliffe CT5 2QR or Reculver CT6 6ST
Length: 6.7 miles (10.8km)
Duration (estimated based on 7-8mph cycling): 50 minutes
Route layout: linear

Travelling east from Whitstable, the Oyster Bay Trail is signed Regional Route 15 and provides a route from the Railway Station, through Whitstable Harbour along the promenade at Tankerton to Swalecliffe and then Hampton. The route then follows the traffic-calmed Herne Bay seafront and rejoins the promenade at the eastern end of Herne Bay. At Bishopstone it goes around woodland and on towards Reculver Country Park where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the sea from the Portrait Bench, a delight at sunset.

The Sustrans Local Travel Map shows the route and it is well signposted along the way. For those wishing to venture out of the district and cycle further afield, the Oyster Bay Trail links with the Viking Coastal Trail which continues east towards Margate. At its western extent in Whitstable the trail also links with the Crab and Winkle Way which is part of the National Cycle Network Route 1 providing a mostly traffic-free route south into Canterbury.

The route is well signposted, look out for the Oyster Bay Trail logo to keep you on the right track.
