Byzantine Icon Workshop
An 8 day introductory workshop into the world of Orthodox Icons.
Participants will make an icon using time honoured techniques in the Byzantine style using the Russian float method and egg tempera paints, which are made from precious stone such as azurite and malachite etc. You will learn the application of gold leaf and its decoration, your materials will impart a jewel like appearance to your gessoed icon board.
All materials, including a traditional icon board will be included in the price.

Tutor: Ann Walsh's practice
It has been said that each of the historic branches of Christianity, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodoxy, has received a special gift but to the Orthodox people, especially those of Byzantium and Russia has fallen the gift of perceiving the beauty of the spiritual world. The art of the icon has changed less in 1500 years than Western Art has in 500. This does not mean that there are no changes but icons have to maintain certain principals in order to be acknowledged as icons for they are an essential part of worship . They must maintain the Tradition.

When working on an icon the the iconographer fasts and tries to adopt a sober lifestyle.
The icons are made with egg tempera, from natural mineral pigments applied to a gesso ground upon wood. They are often gilded . They represent various saints and their lives and the Christian narrative indicated by the Great Feasts of the Church . Icons exhibit various styles , colours and methods of production and these differences can be linked to geographic regions and historical periods . Sometimes these variations are quite local . My icons are made using the Russian float method and sometimes the Greek proplasmos technique.
