Herne Bay Pier, Helter Skelter

Herne Bay Pier

Pier Avenue,
Herne Bay,

Herne Bay has a long history as a traditional seaside town and the seashore and gardens along the front are still as beautiful as they were a hundred years ago. The bandstand which is a much larger structure than it sounds was renovated into a popular eatery and entertainment building only a few years ago with European funding and now a group of volunteers running a registered charity called the Herne Bay Pier Trust, described by the Piers Society as one of the most active groups in the pier world, is busy regenerating the huge pier into an attractive venue with an intriguing mix of retail huts, craftsmanship and entertainment. Come and see a pier in the making.

In 2013 the pier Trust built a row of 12 retail outlets along the leg of the pier and this year it has planning permission to build another 16 huts including a large café/restaurant. Funded by Kent Community Foundation. These huts intended to encourage start-up businesses to test out their dreams in affordable and attractive surroundings are rentable at very reasonable costs. The Trust also has plans for a stage for music, dance and all kinds of performance with a programme of events such as specialist markets, shows, film, and exhibitions planned for the summer of 2015.

The Pier Trust was delighted to welcome onto the pier last year one of its tenants the owner of the iconic helter-skelter now situated at the end of the platform and he has invested in a boating lake for the under tens to sit in and drive the little motor boats as well as other children's activities.

Herne Bay is definitely one of the towns to visit as it is developing a very active gathering of artists and theatre performers based in the art centre Beach Creative and in the newly renovated King's Hall. The seafront is one of the best in the north of Kent.
