An Artful and Jazz-Filled Adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Novel 'The Beautiful Damned'
Adapted & Directed by Ben Weaver-Hincks
Fresh from a successful run in the heart of Soho, James Hyde brings his F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation, Beautiful Damned to Kent at The Charlton Park Foundation, Canterbury on Saturday, February 7th at 8pm (Bar opens at 7.30pm) in 2015.
A live jazz piano illustrates this lusciously adapted piece, taking the audience firmly back to the hedonistic Jazz era as they watch this poignant course of events unfold in a cabaret style setting within Charlton Park's stunning Ballroom.
Husband and wife meet in a smoky bar and relive the last ten years of their lives. Told through a series of flashbacks, re-enactments and reminiscences, Beautiful Damned is the profile of a relationship from its first breaths to a point of no return.
"Captures the fleeting, hopeless lives of its protagonists and throws its audience into their dark and decadent world."
"So intimate and sexy you can feel the heat. The era is so clearly captured it's transporting."
The Beautiful and Damned is Fitzgerald’s second novel, and perhaps more than any other, is primarily the portrait of two people – Gloria and Anthony Patch, based loosely upon Fitzgerald himself and his wife Zelda. Although the characters live in an endless present, this is tempered by an obsession with their own narrative histories, enabling them to avoid taking responsibility for their circumstances.
Franco-Swiss Actress Nadia Cavelle stars as Gloria, and Arts Educational graduate James Hyde as her husband Anthony. James returns to Charlton Park having played outdoor Shakespeare productions there with Castle Theatre Company and Durham University.
Award-winning Musician Guy Hughes performs as the Jazz Pianist, and has also acted as Musical Director on the project. “Beautiful Damned” promises to be a delicious evening of theatre and jazz at Charlton Park for ages 12 and upwards.
