    Stravinsky - The Soldier's Tale
    Walton - Façade

Our new ensemble-in-residence makes its debut with two contrasting classics of twentieth-century music. The Soldier's Tale tells the Faustian story of a young soldier in WWI who give his violin to the devil in exchange for a book that predicts the future. Stravinsky puts his highly individual stamp on a whole range of musical styles, including waltz, tango and ragtime. Walton composed his Façade when he was just twenty, setting the wickedly funny and irreverent lyrics by the eccentric poet, Edith Sitwell. The poems, rhythmically recited, are a wonderful blend of the witty and absurd, and the music compliments this perfectly with a mixture of jazz and cabaret.

The audience is invited to a post-concert glass of fizz to meet the players.
