The human brain is notoriously bad at repairing itself after damage. However, one part of the body’s machinery is capable of this feat. Oligodendrocytes are the cells that produce the myelin sheath, the insulating layer that surrounds nearly all of the nerve fibres in the brain. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one disease where these are destroyed by the body’s own immune system. Robin will describe some of the work carried out recently to develop medicines to promote regeneration in MS – something that until recently was seen as an aspiration. Students will then discuss the Myelin Basic Protein Project, a full research project that has been running at the school for six years.
