Sparkle and Dark - The Girl With no Heart at Gulbenkian TheatreA stark, yet beautiful new fable about the power of a child's heart in a fragile paper world ravaged by war.
Inspired by the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, this award-winning company present another brilliantly realised slice of puppetry, storytelling, live music and shadowplay.
Set in an imaginary world, the show utilises key elements of Japanese culture and the details surrounding the true events of what happened to the children of the Hiroshima and Nagosaki atomic bombs. Their story is famous throughout Japan, but little is known of it in the West. This piece aims to present a modern, universal fable that highlights the fragility and frustration of children surrounded by a war not of their own doing.
The show design focuses on utilising paper for set and props, sometimes building origami pieces live on stage and creating unique paper-inspired puppets that will be half-worn, half-manipulated by their puppeteers.
