A great opportunity to hear John Harle, the world’s leading classical saxophonist, performing with the Festival Chamber Orchestra an exciting programme of music for a summer evening.

John will be performing Glazunov’s bewitching Saxophone Concerto. Written in 1934, Glazunov was enthralled by the saxophone and called it a ‘new timbre’ in classical music. The programme also offers Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs, a beautiful collection of short musical stories that communicate with an uncomplicated directness, but are structurally and harmonically sophisticated. Transcribed for saxophone and string orchestra by John Harle.

The Orchestra also perform pieces by Donizetti and Schubert. Both were born in 1797 and offer the charm, lyricism and vivacity of 18th century music. Schubert’s Symphony No. 5, is said to resemble Mozart, reflected particularly in the lighter instrumentation. Stravinsky’s Pulcinella led him onto neo-classicism, inspired by 18th century music, which established his international reputation.
