Macbeth at Playhouse Theatre WhitstableThe Lindley Players present Macbeth by William Shakespeare.
The web of superstition which surrounds Macbeth obscures, for many, the truth that this is one of Shakespeare's most challenging and dangerous plays.
Written at a time of religious and political upheaval, it treats a number of themes – witchcraft, equivocation, predestination and regicide – in an extremely dangerous fashion. In an age when to be anything other than Protestant could earn the death sentence; Shakespeare, who was at the time in royal favour, confronts these subjects head on.
The intention behind this production is to give full weight to these areas by means of magical illusion, lighting and sound to drive, what is one of Shakespeare’s most tightly written works, to its inevitable bloody conclusion.
The setting is bleak and post-modern, the music operatic and the effects sensational – what can possibly go wrong?
