Parking at Canterbury

Parking charges
Daytime parking tariffs apply between 7am and 9pm. Linear tariff means you get the exact amount of parking time for the amount of money you put in, up to a maximum of that machine (after you have paid for the minimum fee).

Car parks
The majority of our off-street car parks are pay and display; ticket machines are located in each car park. On-street parking bays around the city are pay and display and tickets can be purchased from nearby machines. A range of coins are accepted but the machines do not give change.

Payment cards
We have two types of payment cards available.
(a) Our Parking Cards give a 10 per cent discount and can be used in any off-Street pay and display machine, Castle Street multi-storey car park and Park and Ride sites. They can also be used at on street pay and display parking bays.
(b) Our Park and Ride cards give a 20 per cent discount to encourage our customers to park outside of the city. They can only be used at all Canterbury Park and Ride sites.

Parking for Blue Badge Holders
Vehicles displaying a vaild blue badge can use pay and display car parks for up to three hours free of charge, and can buy pay and display tickets to extend parking time if required. Please use the table on the pdf to find car parks with dedicated parking bays for disabled badge holders. They have a tick in the DP column.

Motorcycle Parking
Please see the pdf for car parks with free motorcycle parking. They have a tick in the M/C column. Motorcyclists who park in normal parking bays must buy and display a valid ticket.

Bicycle Parking
Bicycle stands are available at numerous locations around the city.

Residents' off-street parking
Residents can buy permits allowing them to park in most public car parks. There are three types of permit available:
(a) A limited permit allows the holder to park overnight and at weekends and bank holidays in most pay and display car parks.
(b) An unlimited permit allows the holder to park at all times in most pay and display car parks.
(c) There are a number of dedicated residents' car parks in Canterbury for which specific permits are provided subject to availability.

Residents' on-street parking
Residents can buy on-street permits that allow parking without a time limit in marked bays in designated zones, and in certain car parks overnight and at weekends. These are provided subject to availability.

Residents' visitors' vouchers
Residents who live in residents' parking zones can buy visitors' vouchers for their visitors. The vouchers are available from the council at our Military Road offices or by post from the council offices.

Business users' permits
Permits are available for people who work in the city centre and regularly use their vehicle during the working day in connection with their business or employment. They allow the permit holder to park in certain car parks, making it easier to find a parking space during the working day.

Minibuses and motor caravans in Canterbury
Minibuses and motor caravans under 5.5 metres long (18'0") may park in Canterbury Coach Park during the day. There is a special reserved area for motor caravans at New Dover Road Park and Ride with extra facilities.

The Bekesbourne Camping and Caravan park is just off the A257 Littlebourne Road, two miles east of the city centre. Parking enforcement
Canterbury City Council is responsible for enforcing parking restrictions and employ Civil Enforcement Officers to patrol streets and car parks.

Whitefriars
Canterbury City Council does not manage the Whitefriars shopping centre car park. For more details call the car park on 01227 826769. For your convenience, the Whitefriars car park is shown on the pdf map as location 23.
