Make Mosaic!

Participants discover Roman mosaics and how they were made. They then take on the role of musivarius or Roman mosaic maker, before creating their own mini ceramic mosaic, or larger class mosaic inspired by Roman designs and artefacts from Canterbury Museums and Galleries collections.

This activity takes place at Canterbury Heritage Museum. It is recommended that this session is combined with a visit to Canterbury Roman Museum with its stunning in situ mosaics to create a memorable half or whole day visit.

Curriculum links: Key Stage 1 and 2 history, maths (tessellation and repeating patterns), design & technology, art.
Cost: £5 per child (minimum charge £100). This session can also be delivered as a museum outreach activity in school. £350 whole day, £200 half day, plus £1 per child for materials, plus petrol. Up to 4 classes can be taught in a whole day session.
Time: 1 hour and 20 minute interpreter-led activity.
