The ukulele has gone from strength to strength in recent years, undergoing a massive resurgence. You can hear the uke all over the place, from trendster indie rock to top ten pop songs, from unshakeable TV ads to YouTube megahits. Famous idlers Gavin Pretor-Pinney and Tom Hodgkinson have spent hours idling away on their ukuleles to produce the ultimate uke handbook: an illustrated guide to its history crossed with a how-to guide and songbook.

To celebrate the book’s launch, WhitLit presents a pluckin’ marvellous get-together for all ukulele fans. Come strum and sing with the fabulous Gordon from the legendary Herne Bay City Ukers group calling the tunes (songs can be downloaded in advance from Gordon’s Bay City Ukers Blog spot) with chat, singing and book signing from Tom and Gav. Bar and open mic during the interval. Kazoos, tambourines and hats welcome. Sob yer heart out, George Formby.

Tom Hodgkinson is the author of How To Be Idle and How To Be Free. He is editor and co-founder of the Idler and contributes to the Guardian, the Sunday Times and the Independent on Sunday.

Gavin Pretor-Pinney is the founder of The Cloud Appreciation Society, a global organisation he set up to fight ‘blue-sky thinking’. He is currently proposing that a new cloud type, Asperatus, should be added to the International Cloud Atlas – if he succeeds, this would be the first new official cloud type since 1951. He is also the co-founder and creative director of the Idler and author of the bestselling The Cloudspotter’s Guide.
