On Saturday 9th May, the Switchblade Roller Girls will travel the 130 miles from Lille, France to take on the Kent Roller Girls (KRG). They are crossing the channel to play Roller Derby, an extreme American sport, played by on quad style roller skates. It’s a fast paced game which requires both strategy and athleticism, and is an action packed hour of fun that will entertain the whole family.

The game involves two point-scorers, called Jammers, who have a speed skate race around a track trying to score points by passing the blockers. The two teams of blockers from either side however are trying to knock the opposition off the track and help their jammer through – which results in skaters bumping and bashing each other, or using their jumping and juking skills to avoid collisions.

Kent are ranked 63rd out of 300 leagues on the continent but this will be their first foray into a European game. Co-Captain Molly Jupitus, a Masters student at Canterbury University said “As a team we are always looking for new challenges – and new ways to showcase the sport. The team train hard every week and it will be great to see their work paying off on track.”

There will be a bar and raffle on the day, alongside a special guest to blow the first whistle .

Why not find out what Roller Derby is all about come to Herne Bay Arena, 4pm, Saturday 9th May – the game is only £5 and under 12s are free.

If you are a woman over 18 and think “this girl can”, then you can give the sport a try for yourself at Herne Bay as the Kent Roller Girls will loan you kit and teach you their skills at Recreational League on Sundays (see Facebook for details) . Men and non-skaters are welcome to participate as there are a range of official and referee roles available too.

After Lille, Kent Roller Girls next game is against Milton Keynes Concrete Cows on 13 June as part of the British Championships.
