The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge
18 High Street,
This exhibition is an artist's response to 'The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge'. The paintings and drawings will all have connections to the Beaney's art and artefacts displayed in the Garden Room and upstairs galleries.
Diane Smalley intertwines various elements of the Beaney in a playful way to entice the viewer to spend just a little more time searching for what could be secreted within the work and more importantly in the Beaney itself.
'My objective is to create work that has whimsical associations with its surroundings. To achieve this, I will be using anagrams of specific artists' names to generate the choice of objects in my paintings. I will only use artists that have work in the Beaney permanent exhibitions, both in the Garden Room and upstairs galleries.
These anagrammatically phrases will also draw attention to either a museum exhibit or a physical characteristic from the Beaney. In addition, my paintings try to relate to both the work of the artist and the extensive natural history aspects synonymous with the Beaney'.
