Details

This great Abbey, marking the rebirth of Christianity in southern England, was founded shortly after AD 597 by St Augustine. Originally created as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent, it is part of the Canterbury World Heritage Site along with Canterbury Cathedral and St Martin's Church. The impressive Abbey is situated outside the City walls and is sometimes missed by visitors. At the Abbey, you can also enjoy the museum and interactive audio tour.

Guided tours lasting approximately 30-45 minutes may be available for advance booking only.

Coach Parking - as there is no coach parking on site, please drop off outside the abbey and park at Canterbury Coach Park.

Food and Drink - the gift shop sells a variety of hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams. Picnic Area - you are welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the grounds. There are benches throughout the Abbey ruins as well as seating and tables outside the museum building. Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds. Assistance dogs welcome across the site. Audio tours in English, French and Japanese.

St Augustine's Abbey is a short walk over the road from Canterbury city centre. There is no parking on site. The nearest car park (charged) is just opposite on the Longport road. Not managed by English Heritage.
