Coastal Walking and Cycling in Herne Bay and Whitstable

There is no better way to explore the delights of the coast than by bicyle or on foot. The charming and varied coastline offers some of the most scenic coastal cycle routes around. There is something for everyone, whether it's a refreshing short break, a fun family day out or simply a challenge, cyclists and walkers can enjoy a refreshing and enriching experience.

Coastal Walking

The Saxon Shore Way is a 163 mile walk from Gravesend along the north Kent coast and on to Hastings in East Sussex.

The Minnis Bay to Reculver Park - this is a lovely sea walk and cycle route that follows the Viking Coastal Trail and mainly uses the northern seawall. There is plenty to see including a salt-water lagoon and a working shellfish nursery. It is 3.7 miles (6km) one-way or 7.4 miles (12km) returning to the start.

Herne Bay and Whitstable Maritime Heritage Trail - this trail encompasses 3 colour coded trails - red, blue and yellow.

Reculver Walk - enjoy the sights and sounds to be experienced along one of the most rapidly changing stretches of the Kent coastline.

Coastal Cycling

Crab & Winkle Way - Originally a six-mile railway line running between Canterbury and Whitstable between 1830 and 1952, some of it was reopened as a cycle and walking route. It passes through beautiful countryside and woodlands including Blean Woods, one of the largest areas of ancient woodland in England, and is home to a wide range of flowers, butterflies and birds.

The Viking Coastal Trail - from Pegwell Bay to Reculver - this route can be broken into shorter coastal and inland sections.

Oyster Bay Trail - Travelling east from Whitstable, the Oyster Bay Trail is signed Regional Route 15 and provides a route from the Railway Station through Whitstable Harbour along the promenade at Tankerton to Swalecliffe and then Hampton. The route then follows the traffic calmed Herne Bay sea front and rejoins the promenade at the eastern end of Herne Bay. At Bishopstone it goes around woodland and on towards Reculver Country Park where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the sea from the Portrait Bench, a delight at sunset.

The Explore Kent Oyster Bay Trail Map shows the route and it is well signposted along the way. For those wishing to venture out of the district and cycle further afield, the Oyster Bay Trail links with the Viking Coastal Trail which continues east towards Margate. At its western extent in Whitstable the trail also links with the Crab and Winkle Way which is part of National Cycle Network Route 1 providing a mostly traffic-free route south into Canterbury.
