Radio Arts is an independent artists’ group based in East Kent engaged in experimental broadcasting projects, stemming from our belief in the airwaves as a public space that should be open to all for creative purposes.
This exhibition presents an on-site micro-broadcast of newly commissioned works alongside radio produced during our season of workshops across Kent in 2013 – 14. It is accompanied by video projections from Margate-based digital artists Genetic Moo which are responsive to the surrounding sounds.
Featuring work from:
This radio art piece explores the fragile line between the real and the illusion. Representing acoustically what is said in the poem, read in diverse languages by women from different places of the world.
This project documents the imaginary use of radio by aeroplankton. Microscopic airborne protozoa called Radiolaria Aeoliae, display intricate mineral skeletons which act as receivers of extremely shortwave radio signals.
Radio Recall (2013)
Radio Recall is one of eight speculative ‘trace stations’: fictional radio stations that comprise Magz Hall’s ‘Switch Off’ project that imagines the sounds and novel uses to which the FM spectrum will be put following the proposed ‘analogue switch off’ of terrestrial FM broadcasting.
‘Incidentals’ is a new work produced in response to the interview material gathered by Magz Hall and sourced from SW, LW and MW transmissions picked up from her collection of vintage radio receivers. It is presented interwoven with ‘Radio Recall’.
Michael McHugh and Noizechoir
The Dream of the Dream Scientist (2014)
Jason will take the listener through what it means to be asleep and discuss what is happening to our bodies when we dream.Biomedical data captured during Jason’s study has been re-interpreted by the Noizechoir to create graphical scores. This 60 minute sound portrait of the sleep centre consists of choral pieces performed and recorded by the Noizechoir along with a recording of Jason’s experience as he takes us through the process and the science that underpins it.
CRAZY HORSE ONE-EIGHT (a radio cantata in memory of those killed) (2014)
Crazy Horse One-Eight addresses the weaponization of radiophonic space in the perpetration of these war crimes, while also confronting the casual and dismissive language of the interactions themselves, as evidenced in the transcript of the radio exchanges between helicopters and command.
The Dreamlands commissions (will include a new work by Esther Johnson) will be aired later in the year on Basic FM, Radio Reverb, Sound Art Radio and Resonance FM in the UK, Radio Papesse in Italy and Wave Farm in the USA.
The project has been supported by Arts Council England and Kent County Council
