Ira Sachs | USA / Greece | 2016 | 85mins | Michael Barbieri, Theo Taplitz, Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Ehle, Paulina Garcia

Ira Sachs' follow-up to his vastly acclaimed Love Is Strange (2014) is another wonderfully understated, thoughtful and movingly humane investigation into the impact material circumstances can have on relationships. It’s anchored by wonderfully natural performances from its two young leads (Michael Barbieri and Theo Taplitz). Quiet, sensitive Jake meets brash but affable Tony at his grandfather’s funeral and the boys become inseparable best friends during school vacation. But their bond is tested when Jake’s parents (Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Ehle) become embroiled in a real-estate battle with Tony’s mother (Paulina Garcia). Sachs explores the difficulty of maintaining childhood bonds against the social divides of race, class and culture.
