79 - 82 Northgate,

The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) - The School of Family History was the first centre for Family History Studies.

Situated in the heart of Canterbury, we are located in a 13th century hall house, built by monks to accommodate pilgrims who arrived in the city after the nightly closing of the Northgate. Later additions were made during the Elizabethan and Georgian periods. The building houses the Institute's comprehensive library, collections and resources for research.

The IHGS runs its own bookshop, which can be visited in person or online, and offers the use of its extensive library to members of the public. Expert advice on family history and heraldic research is available.

The Institute is managed as an educational charitable Trust and is supported in its academic work by our research arm, Achievements, a non-profit making centre for genealogical research and artwork,

Our team of qualified and experienced family history researchers is on hand to offer you the best and most economical service available, if you are stuck with researching your family tree or would like to discover more about your ancestors.
