Gavin Esler in Conversation with Brenda Blethyn OBE

Join BBC Journalist, author and University of Kent Chancellor Gavin Esler for an evening of conversation exploring the life and work of his special guest, Brenda Blethyn OBE.

Brenda Blethyn was born in Ramsgate, Kent, the youngest of nine children in a working class family. She studied at The Thanet Technical College on leaving school, and went on to work for ten years as a secretary. She discovered a passion for theatre in an amateur capacity, and at 27 enrolled at The Guildford School of Acting. Since then has worked extensively in theatre, television and film. She is best known for her portrayal of Cynthia in Secrets & Lies for which she won a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award nomination, Her performance in Little Voice won her a second Academy Award nomination. She has also been recognised for her performance in films such as Pride & Prejudice (BAFTA nomination), Saving Grace (Golden Globe nomination), Atonement, A River Runs Through It, Lovely & Amazing, Clubland, London River and Two Men in Town. She is the voice of Ethel in Raymond Briggs’ biopic of his parents Ethel & Ernest.

Her numerous television appearances include Anne Frank: The Whole Story, Law & Order - Special Victims Unit (both of which earned her Primetime Emmy Award nominations), Belonging (BAFTA nomination and Golden FIPA win). Outside Edge (British Comedy Award), and Mary and Martha. Her most recent television appearance is as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in ITV’s award winning crime drama series VERA now in it’s seventh series.

By car: Situated on the campus of the University of Kent. Follow the A2/M2 towards Dover and turn off onto the A28 towards Canterbury. Continue up to a large roundabout and follow the signs to 'The University'. When on the University's campus, follow the signs to the Gulbenkian Theatre. By train: The closest BR train station is Canterbury West. From there, buses are available by Westgate to take you onto the University's campus. From the University drop off point, follow the signs towards the library and the Cornwallis buildings and on to the theatre.
