The Urban Playground (UK) present Steam

Urban explorers discover beneath canvas tarps the skeletal remains of a machine that changed the world. Captivated, they open a furnace and shovel coal on the fires of the past. An elegant model of efficient motion, it is monstrously utilitarian and it is gracefully refined. In the ghostly light of the hungry engine images of epic journeys appear. Engineers and drivers hurry back to work at the sound of a whistle’s blast, and the passengers; the passengers begin to dance…

In STEAM the UPG Team relive the imagined life of a steam locomotive through scenes inspired by the silent movies of Buster Keaton, the gun fights of the old West, the rooftop stunts of James Bond, the hero workers of the Soviet Avant Garde, the daily grind of rush hour and the heartbreak of the first world war. In a dramatic shift of aesthetic the company that defined the look of parkour on stage will return with a narrative dance-theatre piece unlike anything you’ve seen before.
