Dir: Amma Asante | USA / UK / Czech Republic | 2016 | 111 mins
Cast | David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Laura Carmichael, Tom Felton, Jack Davenport
David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike star in the fantastic new drama from British director Amma Asante (Belle, A Way of Life) based on an extraordinary true story. In 1947, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana) Seretse Khama (Oyelowo) falls in love with British office worker Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike). Their controversial union generates fierce opposition not just from their families, but also the British and South African governments. But Seretse and Ruth defy family, apartheid and Empire to stay together. Exploring the intersect between a particular story and its universal affect, A United Kingdom charts a complex and painful chapter in Britain's social history.
