Shortly after the martyrdom of Thomas Becket in 1170, images of his violent death had spread across Europe.

Dr Alixe Bovey, Director of the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies & Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Kent, examines the emergence of a standard iconography of martyrdom, and considers its role in promoting Canterbury as a pilgrimage destination.
