Arts Award at the Beaney
Arts Award is an exciting and enjoyable way for young people to experience the arts, develop creative and leardership skills and achieve a national accredited qualification. It can be achieved at 5 levels (Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold) to suit young people age 5 to 25.
The Beaney is an accredited Arts Award Centre. We have Arts Award advisers trained to facilitate and mediate all levels of Arts Award and would be delighted to discuss project ideas with schools and youth organisations.
The Beaney is particularly strong in the following artforms: visual arts, combined arts, craft, film and video, literature and photography.
We work collaboratively with other Arts Award centres and artists in the Canterbury district and across East Kent.

Case Study: Worthgate Scout Group achieves Arts Award success at the Beaney (January 2014)
Twelve members of Canterbury’s Worthgate Scout Group including a Beaver, Cubs, Scouts and a Young Leader have been the first to achieve a prestigious Arts Award Explore qualification at the Beaney Art Museum and Library!
The group enjoyed a guided tour of the Beaney, including a chance to see behind the scenes, investigate artists and arts organisations, and take part in a fun workshop led by local artist Leanne McDonald to create multimedia artworks inspired by paintings or objects on display.
These included a duck-billed platypus, inspired by one in the Beaney’s Cabinet of Curiosities; exotic birds including parrots and a kiwi; a Ship of Fool; and a re-interpretation of a favourite Beaney portrait The Little Girl at the Door. The completed pieces were displayed in a small exhibition in the Beaney galleries which was attended by family and friends.
Participants completed ArtsAward Explore logbooks and gave short presentations about their work.
As well as being presented with their Arts Award certificates, participants gained an impressive range of beaver, cub and scout badges as a result of this project!
Arts Award is a fun way to enjoy the arts, develop creative and leadership skills and achieve a national qualification.
The project was part of a wider Arts Council funded Artswork South East Bridge project which enabled recently trained Arts Award Advisers to support children and young people achieve Arts Award qualifications in museums and galleries across Kent.
